FAQs
What is the island like, weather, etc.?
Bald Head Island, known for its picturesque beauty and unspoiled beaches, is located on the east side of the Cape Fear River in North Carolina and accessible only by boat. Boasting a striking variety of natural environments (ocean and river beaches, marshes, a maritime forest, and more), Bald Head Island exudes tranquility and peace. Average temperatures in late September are in the mid 60's to high 70's.
Can I bring my family with me?
We are working with a coordinator on the island who is setting up participants in a variety of beach houses. Some may choose to share housing with others; some may choose more private accomodations; some may choose to bring family with them. If you do want to bring family with you, we will put you directly in touch with our coordinator to make your arrangements that best fit your preferences. In addition, we are arranging for a kiddie camp with the local country club. More details on that soon!
Please note that If you choose to bring your family and enroll your child/children in day camp, your significant other might be interested in other activities on the island, like cycling, world class golfing, boating or sailing, and some seriously needed catch-up lounging :)
How do I get to learnfest?
If you are driving in, you would park at the ferry station and head right over to the island. You will be provided with a packet of information at the station that will ensure you get to where you need to go. If you are flying in, please make arrangements to fly to the Wilmington airport. You can either take a taxi to the ferry station or arrange for shuttle transport.
Where can I find the ferry schedule?
We will be sending you detailed ferry information as we get closer to September, but you can see the ferry schedule
here.
How do I get around on the island?
There are no cars allowed on the island, which significantly adds to the "getting away from it all" feel of the beach. When arriving by ferry, you will travel by tram (to transport your luggage) to your accommodations. After that, all commuting on the island is by golf cart or by bicycle (which you can rent there) or by your own sweet feet.
I am interested in learning more about shooting. Will I have to compete with 60 people to be able to work with the models?
No. We are arranging everything so that you will be rotating through long sessions with each of the four photographers in groups of 15, max, and we are conducting learnfest this way especially so that we can still offer a small group feel to the entire experience.
What do I to do to reserve my space?
Registration is now open, click here to reserve your space.
What happens if I cannot attend (for whatever reason) after I have registered?
All deposits are non-refundable but you are welcome to transfer registration to another photographer. Just please let us know that you are doing so at your earliest convenience!
What should I bring with me?
Casual, comfortable clothing, relaxed footwear should you even bother with shoes :) A camera, lens selection and laptop if you have one.
What is Bald Head Island all about?
We think it's paradise! Click here to visit the website.
When can I register? Today! Given the level of interest we've received to date, we expect registration to move briskly (we have received several hundreds of emails for the 60 slots available), so if this does sound like a fit for you, we'd encourage you to register right away.
